Help us plant 1000+ rainforest trees in Cambodia

This morning, like many of you all, we woke up to the news that the Amazon rainforest – often called the lungs of the earth – is on fire and being burned down at an incredibly alarming rate. This is heart breaking and terrifying – and we are still processing. But it made it ever more important to continue with the campaign we had been planning to launch today.

Southeast Asia was once covered with approximately 500 million acres of rain forest, but only about 5 percent remains. One fifth of those remaining forests are in Cambodia - but Cambodia is being deforested at a faster rate than almost any country in the world. With an issue that hits so close to home that is also critical in the fight against climate change - we wanted to do something to help.

We are selling two t-shirts inspired by rainforest trees in Cambodia, to fund the planting of 1000 trees.

For each t-shirt purchased we will plant 5 trees. Our goal is to support the planting and protecting of 1000 trees this time around – if this works well we’re hoping it could be an ongoing project. The tree planting will be happening on community owned land in Siem Reap province. We are working on this project with For the Forest, a new organization, alongside members of the local community, tonlé team members, paid community members, and volunteers will also participate in and execute the tree planting – scheduled to start September 20th.

This t-shirt is printed with a drawing of Dalbergia cochinchinensis, one of the trees we will be planting. Dalbergia cochinchinensis is commonly known as Thailand rosewood, Siamese rosewood, or tracwood, or ក្រញូង (Kranhung) in Khmer -  and is a species of legume in the Fabaceae family. It is a threatened tree yielding valuable hardwood found in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. Conservationists project that the species could be extinct within 10 years.

In addition to Kranhung – Other trees that will be planted include food bearing species that provide economic incentive to the community to protect and care for the forest.

Why pre-order? Pre-order allows us to know exactly how many t-shirts to produce - meaning there is no excess inventory. This saves money and allows us to donate a chunk of change to our tree planting goals at one time!

Other ways to support:

  • If you're in Cambodia - join in and volunteer at our tree planting! Reach out at hello@tonle.com for more details.
  • Share on social media (Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, etc...) every little bit helps!
  • If you'd like to financially contribute, but don't want a shirt, you're welcome to make a donation via paypal. We're not a non-profit so this is not tax deductible - but the money will be sent directly to our tree planting campaign by members of our team in Cambodia. We'll share with you the photos of the trees that we planted on your behalf in September.
