Featured Retailer: Amara

Amara is a collection of ethically sourced jewelry, accessories, clothes and home goods from around the world that combines modern design and values. Located in Portland, Oregon, this quaint Life + Style + Cause boutique has stories to tell with every product that it stocks. Owner/operator, Angela Griffin-Meyers, hopes for customers to connect with the wonderful stories behind what they are buying.

What is your personal or business mission?

To provide beautiful products that support artisans and causes locally and globally. "We'll admit it - we're idealists. We believe in equality, and we envision a world where style co-exists with ethics, and where everyone has a voice. But that's just the beginning. Everything has a story - the story of who made it, their culture, talents, struggles and traditions. By telling the stories of global makers, we contribute to a culture of transparency, connection, equality and understanding. And we could all use more of that."

What is most unique about your shop?

I have (and am always looking for more) product lines that were started specifically to empower women in difficult circumstances. I love learning about the stories around these products and watching my customers faces light up when they hear them.

Why is buying ethical, fair trade or environmentally responsible products important to you?

Because it’s the right thing to do to care for ourselves, the planet, global equity and future generations. Having these products in my shop gives a great opportunity to educate people a little on the difference they are making. Plus, there are so many great lines out there now, that nobody has to sacrifice style for ethical shopping!

What do you or your customers love about tonlé?

The fabrics are unique and beautiful, and the designs are simple and flattering for a lot of sizes. Plus, women love pockets in their dresses and tunics, so that gets people really excited!
